A DAY IN THE LIFE:

Kinder Students at Young Seed Preschool

Self-Directed Activities

Classes start with Kinder students choosing their favorite classroom areas and activities, like:

  • putting train cars from 1-100

  • signing attendance sheets with their full name in both upper and lowercase letters

  • illustrating recent experiences by drawing people, animals, and things with many details

They love to talk freely and invite classmates to join them in their block play and dramatic play.

Circle/Meeting Time

During Meeting Time, they enforce classroom rules to ensure fairness and harmony. We do mini lessons on Social Studies, Science, Math or Language and Reading, which ultimately satisfies their curiosity and generates lots of questions. They show interest in others’ comments and ideas, and comprehend a discussion among 4 or 5 participants.  Regular team games for demonstrating concepts are also played during the week.

Work Time Activities

The Kindergarten child enjoys choosing activities to work on at the work table, but understands that there are days when he or she needs to do an activity that teacher chooses and cooperates accordingly.

There may be block play in Social Studies to build a mini-zoo just visited, using a map and plastic animals, or a Math activity on understanding place value, addition or subtraction wherein concrete materials and pictures are used to represent abstract concepts.  There may be lessons in Phonics to support reading, writing and spelling.  Worksheets are used not to teach concepts but to assess the child’s learning as a result of varied activities during this period.

Work Time is a busy period because the Kindergarten child can wait for directions before beginning a group activity and can continue work on a task or project for one day and to resume working on it the next day.
