A DAY IN THE LIFE:

Senior Nursery Students at Young Seed Preschool

Math, Science and Creativity

To strengthen their math skills, finger strength, and eye-hand coordination, Senior Nursery students engage in such fun activities as:

  • putting together 10 or more puzzle pieces

  • practicing button, snap, and zip using dress-up frames

  • stringing small beads in various patterns of color and shapes

  • sorting objects in more than two categories (i.e. shape + size)

  • matching a numeral to a set of objects

  • building more elaborate block structures

(Watching them discover how bigger blocks at the bottom and smaller blocks on top make a tower steadier is always too precious!)

Language and Reading

Reading is such a magical thing! With our collection of age-appropriate books, our kids look at pictures, tell or make up stories using book language, sequence simple events, and learn letter sounds and then blend them to form meaningful words.

Fun and multi-sensory systematic phonics lessons (e.g. singing letter sounds with actions) begin at this level of schooling. These lessons include writing letters using proper strokes, as well.

Self-Expression and Creativity

Classes start with storytelling sessions. From there, students get to draw and then do dramatic plays.

We specifically designed drawing activities to come after storytelling to help our students develop the ability to express their ideas about the story or to recreate their own. Ideas that are drawn, spoken, and dictated by the child are connected to the words and sentences the teacher writes to explain a child’s drawings.

Dramatic plays, on the other hand, are super fun because it’s children assuming roles and playing out happy experiences or conflict they may experience in story events, in school, or at home. They always get mega excited — we’re not even kidding! — and so they would often end up doing more than one event and, at times, play more than one role!

Circle Time/ Meeting Time

During circle time, children gather together to pray, engage in morning greetings, and fill in a weekly calendar chart. From there, they participate in music and movement activities or dramatic play (picture this: a caterpillar crawling and weaving a cocoon around himself!)

But most importantly, children learn how to share their ideas, be aware of their personal space, listen to ideas other than their own, and follow simple rules.
